Before you call

Five checks that solve some AC problems in minutes

These are safe for any homeowner and can save a service call. If none of them work, call.

  • Thermostat: set to Cool, a few degrees below room temperature, fan on Auto. Replace the batteries if it has them.
  • Breakers: check both the indoor furnace or air handler breaker and the outdoor AC breaker. Reset a tripped one once.
  • Outdoor disconnect: the switch or pull-out block in the box next to the condenser should be on or fully seated.
  • Air filter: a clogged filter can freeze the coil and stop cooling. Replace it if it is dirty.
  • Condensate switch: many systems shut off if the drain pan fills. Look for water in the pan or a tripped float switch.

If the breaker trips again, you hear buzzing from the outdoor unit, or the indoor coil is frozen, stop and call. Running it can damage the compressor.

Fountain Valley, CA

Mild most of the year, until it isn't

Fountain Valley sits a few miles inland from Huntington Beach, close enough for ocean air to keep most summer days mild. That means many local AC systems sit idle for weeks and then get pushed hard during a late-summer heat wave, which is exactly when weak parts fail.

Much of the city was built in the 1960s and 1970s, after it incorporated in 1957, so many homes have a furnace in the garage, attic or a hall closet with a cooling coil on top, and ductwork in the attic. Original systems have mostly been replaced at least once, but ductwork is often original.

Some older systems still run on R-22 refrigerant, which has not been produced in the United States since 2020. Repairs that need refrigerant can be expensive on those systems, and that often changes the repair-or-replace math.

Repair or replace

When repair makes sense, and when it doesn't

The technician should give you both numbers. These are the factors most people weigh.

FactorLeans toward repairLeans toward replacement
System ageUnder about 10 to 12 years15 years or older
RefrigerantR-410A or newer, no major leakR-22 system needing a recharge, or repeated leaks
Failed partCapacitor, contactor, fan motor, sensorCompressor or coil on an older system
Repair historyFirst significant repairSeveral repairs in the last few years
ComfortHouse cooled evenly before the failureHot rooms, high bills, noise even when working

In California, replacing a central AC or furnace generally requires a permit, and duct leakage testing may be required. A licensed contractor handles this.

AC and heating questions

Why is my AC running but not cooling?

Common causes are a dirty filter or coil, a failed outdoor fan or capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, or a compressor that is not starting. A technician measures pressures and temperatures to find out which.

Can I just add refrigerant?

Refrigerant is not used up. If it is low, there is a leak. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is a short-term fix. Technicians must be EPA-certified to handle refrigerant.

How long should a central AC last?

Many systems last around 12 to 15 years, sometimes longer in mild coastal climates where they run fewer hours. Maintenance and installation quality matter more than age alone.

What license should an HVAC contractor have in California?

The CSLB's C-20 classification covers warm-air heating, ventilating and air-conditioning contractors. Ask for the license number and verify it on the CSLB website.

Is a frozen AC coil an emergency?

Not dangerous, but do not keep running cooling. Switch the thermostat to Off and the fan to On to thaw the coil, replace a dirty filter, and call for service.

Is the call free?

Yes. You only pay the technician for work you approve.
